We celebrate World Hypertension Day on Monday, 17 May 2021. Together with the World Hypertension League (WHL), we invite you to pay attention to your blood pressure measures to prevent yourself from heart diseases or stroke.
According to the World Health Organization, hypertension is a high or raised blood pressure.
It is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure. Blood pressure is created by the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels (arteries) as it is pumped by the heart. The higher the pressure, the harder the heart has to pump.
Hypertension is a serious medical condition. It is often a risk factor to develop heart, brain, kidney, or other diseases.
The World Health Organisation provides the following facts related to hypertension:

Less than 1 in 5 people with hypertension have the problem under control.
The tricky fact about hypertension is that many people having it do not notice any symptoms, and very often, they aren’t aware of the problem.
However, people may feel the following symptoms related to hypertension:
Early morning headaches
Irregular heart rhythms
Buzzing in the ears
Shortness of breath
Blood in the urine
The best way to find out if you have hypertension is to test your blood pressure regularly. An ideal blood pressure is considered to be around 120/80 mmHg. The first number shows your systolic blood pressure; the second is diastolic blood pressure.
According to Healthline, there are two stages of hypertension:
Stage 1: The systolic number is between 130 and 139 mmHg, or the diastolic number is between 80 and 89 mmHg.
Stage 2: The systolic number is 140 mmHg or higher, or the diastolic number is 90 mmHg or higher.
Healthline recommends the following healthy lifestyle changes to control the factors that cause hypertension:
Developing a healthy diet including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins like fish.
Increasing physical activity.
Reaching a healthy weight.
Managing stress with the help of meditation, deep breathing, massage, muscle relaxation, or yoga.
Adopting a cleaner lifestyle by trying to quit smoking or reducing alcohol intake.
