HEALTH & BEAUTY

It is no secret that we spend much of our life and energy in an attempt to be beautiful.

But what is beauty, exactly? Like many words we use every day, we intuitively understand the meaning of it, but we may have difficulty defining it.

Meriam Webster defines beauty as:

the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit

The Cambridge Dictionary provides a secondary explanation of beauty as:

the business of making people look attractive, using make-uptreatments, etc.

The difference in these two definitions illustrates the fundamental tension we feel when it comes to beauty.

If we spend our energy trying to conform to an external standard of beauty, we will probably spend our life unhappy. The standard of beauty expressed in media or fashion magazines is often unrepresentative of real life, or only achieved under unrealistic conditions: photoshoots, photo editing, professional lighting and make-up, etc.

Moreover, if we spend our life chasing the latest version of beauty, what does that say about ourselves? Do we lack so much confidence in our own uniqueness and our own qualities, that we must slavishly copy someone else’s?

Beauty is by all means an aggregate of qualities. Your qualities. One quality may be your voice and the words it speaks or songs it sings. Another quality may be the colour of your eyes or the sheen of your hair. One quality may be the smoothness of your skin, but another quality is the quality of your thoughts and your mind.

There is no ideal version of beauty. Instead, there is the daily routine of our life. This routine can be spend mindlessly chasing the latest tabloids and fashions. Or it can be spent in harmony with yourself, making good decisions, investing in good relationships and enjoying wellness and health.

We believe it is these decisions – decisions on health and wellness – that underlie true beauty. If we take this approach, then we focus on how to positively improve our lives, and measure beauty through wellness.

What can we do? We can make the daily decisions needed to improve our life:

  • Stop smoking. Smoking harms to your health. It causes cancer and contributes to coronary heart disease. It causes poor skin tone, sagging skin, and damaged teeth and gums. Most importantly, while it is your choice to smoke, your second-hand smoke affects many others, notably children.

  • Watch your alcohol consumption: Alcohol such as red wine in moderation can have important health benefits. But too much alcohol over time can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, weakening the immune system, dementia, depression and anxiety.

  • Drink more water. Our body needs water because it lubricates the joints, delivers oxygen throughout the body, boosts skin health and beauty, prevents kidney damage, it may also help with the weight loss.

  • Sleep regularly: Sleeping is one of the most important aspects of health and wellness. Regular sleep supports the healing of your body and generates energy, good feeling and productivity. Bad sleep is linked to higher body weight, higher chances of heart disease and stroke, poor concentration and higher chances of type 2 diabetes.

  • Exercise regularly, ideally outdoors: Take every chance you get for exercise outdoors. This can even include light exercise such as walking too and from work. Make sure you can walk in the fresh air and sunlight whenever possible.

  • Balance your diet: Skin, hair and nails are mostly protein and these proteins – keratin, collagen and elastin – ward off wrinkles and provide stress and elasticity. When you cannot eat a balanced diet, consider vitamins and food supplements to support your body and its metabolism.
